Introduction to MAZOIS DatabaseLES RUINES DE POMPEI by François Mazois (Charles François Mazois, 1783-1826) bequeath records of some of the lost ruins in Pompeii to today. The four volumes were published in Paris by Librairie de Firmin Didot Freres from 1812 to 1838. The fourth volume was published after the death of the author. François Mazois, a French architect who studied under Charles Percier, was one of the leading Neo-classic architects. He served King Murat of Naples and worked on the sketches which were later compiled into LES RUINES DE POMPEI. All four volumes of LES RUINES DE POMPEI belong to the University of Tokyo Research on Pictorial and Cultural Resources (UT-PICURE). This database is a collection of the text and images, including all plates.
"Read the text" has all the original passages in French.
"Thumbnail" is a collection of all 202 plates sketched by the author with explanatory texts added later by himself. Lastly, bibliographical introduction of LES RUINES DE POMPEI, 'The significance of the work of Mazois' by Domenico Esposito (University of Naples), is featured in Italian, English, Japanese. All images used in the database were photographed from the original volumes by Akio SUZUKI (Tokyo University).
